Hi Heidi, if your doctor didn't want to see you right away, obviously he/she felt comfortable with this not being emergent.....it's the very heavy bright red blood that one should worry about, not the darker blood....bright red means it is active bleeding, dark means it is old, or pooled blood...when you have a period, and sleep all night, when you first get up in the morning, the blood is usually darker, because it has been "pooling" in the uterus all night....I wouldn't worry too much about it...since your periods are irregular, it's probably another period....I would look into either going on the birth control pill to regulate your periods & also have a lighter flow, or check out the Thermachoice Balloon Ablation procedure. That would also make your periods significantly lighter to nothing at all....good luck at the doctor's on Wed....Kim, RN, BSN, GYN team leader, surgical nurse.

I am 45. My periods have become irregular and I am extremely moody going from normal and happy to extremely depressed several times a week. I am experiencing sudden angry outbursts. I had my period last week and it lasted a full week. It stopped Friday night but then started again Saturday night but this time it is different. The blood is extremely dark purple. It was light at first but now is heavy.I have an appointment with a Dr. on Wednesday but in the mean time I am frightened. Any ideas?
